RAD Ballet Training: Century of Excellence in Dance

Ballet education has undergone remarkable changes since 1920, yet one organisation has remained the unwavering cornerstone of classical dance training worldwide. As the Elite Academy of Dance, we’ve witnessed first hand how the Royal Academy of Dance continues to shape exceptional dancers across the globe, and we’re proud to be part of this remarkable legacy here in Scotland.

The Foundation That Changed Ballet Forever

When the Royal Academy of Dance emerged in 1920, it didn’t just create another dance syllabus. It established a framework that would become the gold standard for classical ballet education. Today, nearly a century later, we see the profound impact of this vision through our daily work with students at our academy.

The RAD’s influence spans 79 countries with 36 offices and approximately 13,000 members worldwide. This isn’t merely impressive statistics, it represents a global community of dancers, teachers, and institutions united by shared standards of excellence. At Elite Academy of Dance, we’re honoured to contribute to this international network whilst serving our local community in Inverclyde.

What Sets RAD Training Apart

Our experience teaching RAD classical ballet has shown us why this method remains unparalleled. The syllabus encompasses three distinct yet complementary dance disciplines that create well-rounded dancers.

Ballet forms the foundation, the most crucial element of the entire programme. Every student we teach begins with these fundamental principles, regardless of age or ability. From our Pre-Primary classes for children as young as 2½ to our Silverswans programme for dancers over 50, these core ballet techniques remain constant.

Free Movement adds versatility to our students’ training. This discipline incorporates elements from Natural Movement, Contemporary, and Classical Greek Dance, giving our dancers flexibility and artistic range that serves them throughout their journey.

Character dance provides theatrical depth through Hungarian, Russian, and Polish styles. These weren’t chosen arbitrarily, they represent the historic foundations of nineteenth-century classical ballets. When our students perform these character pieces, they’re connecting with ballet’s rich heritage.

Rigorous Standards That Deliver Results

We maintain strict standards because the RAD system demands nothing less. Our recommendation that students attend a minimum of one class weekly, with additional coaching before examinations, reflects the commitment required for genuine progress. This isn’t about convenience, it’s about ensuring every student receives proper preparation for success.

Our qualified teachers undergo extensive training before they’re permitted to teach RAD classical ballet. The two-year teacher qualification programme, combined with mandatory Continuing Professional Development, ensures our students receive current, expert instruction. We don’t compromise on teacher quality because your child’s education deserves the best.

Academic Recognition That Opens Doors

One of RAD’s most significant advantages lies in its academic validation. The Royal Academy of Dance stands as the only dance organisation with exam structures validated by the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority). This means our senior students earn points equivalent to additional Highers, directly benefiting their academic progression.

From Grade 6 onwards, RAD examinations attract UCAS points identical to National 5 and Higher qualifications. We’ve watched our students use these credentials to strengthen university applications, proving that serious dance training complements rather than competes with academic achievement.

Professional Pathways Through RAD Training

Career opportunities in dance almost invariably require RAD credentials. Stage schools and professional training organisations routinely ask prospective students about their Royal Academy background. We’ve guided numerous students through this process, and RAD training consistently opens doors that remain closed to those without this foundation.

Our vocational programme, including Intermediate Foundation through Advanced 2, provides intensive preparation for dance careers. These examinations offer in-depth ballet study specifically designed for students considering professional paths in dance.

Excellence in Our Own Studio Environment

Unlike many schools operating in communal halls, we conduct all classes in our private studio environment. This isn’t about prestige, it’s about creating optimal learning conditions. Our students benefit from consistent flooring, proper mirrors, barres at appropriate heights, and an atmosphere dedicated entirely to dance education.

Every class follows Royal Academy of Dance standards precisely. We don’t adapt or modify the syllabus, we teach it as intended by the RAD’s expert curriculum developers. This consistency ensures our students receive identical training quality to RAD schools anywhere in the world.

Building Skills Through Structured Progression

The RAD graded syllabus creates clear pathways from Pre-Primary through Grade 8. Each level builds systematically upon previous learning, developing technical proficiency, musicality, and performance skills simultaneously. We’ve observed how this structured approach gives students confidence and measurable progress markers.

Our examination preparation involves comprehensive technique work, performance preparation, and theoretical understanding. Students don’t simply learn steps, they understand the principles underlying each movement. This deeper knowledge creates dancers who can adapt, grow, and continue learning independently.

A Proven Track Record of Success

Since entering our first pupils for RAD examinations sixteen years ago, we’ve maintained consistent success rates. This track record reflects our commitment to thorough preparation and high standards. We don’t accept second best in classical ballet education because our students deserve nothing less than excellence.

As the only Royal Academy of Dance school of classical ballet in Inverclyde, we carry particular responsibility for maintaining these standards. Our fully qualified teachers work tirelessly to ensure every student receives world-class instruction, regardless of their starting level or ultimate goals.

The Royal Academy of Dance has spent over a century refining classical ballet education. At Elite Academy of Dance, we’re proud to continue this tradition of excellence whilst nurturing the next generation of Scottish dancers. Our commitment to RAD standards ensures your investment in dance education provides lasting value, whether your goals involve professional dance careers, academic achievement, or lifelong appreciation for this beautiful art form.
